WHAT IS
UNCOMMON WORSHIP?
The Uncommon Worship
Service takes place periodically during the year at 10am
in the First Church Sanctuary (see the specific dates below).
The service blends contemporary and traditional styles
which makes it unique and "uncommon." Uncommon
Worship is spirited and contagious. The
music is led by The Uncommon Worship Band, a band made of
up gifted and talended First Church musicians. The
sermon is often done in dialogue with the congregation,
includes stories, and is short and to the
point. Communion takes place at each service and feels a
bit like a party as everyone is invited to come forward to
share bread together. And after Communion, everyone is
invited to light prayer candles and offer written notes to
God.
First Church teenager and Simsbury
High School Student Charles Scanlon says this about the
Uncommon Worship Service, "..............Uncommon Worship
is a relaxed environment which I enjoy. There is no pressure
to look extremely nice or sit still. People sing, dance,
and offer prayers out loud. The service is interactive
which, for me, makes it very enjoyable."
Uncommon Worship is not just for
youth, it's for all ages. Lauren McCombs, a member of
First Church for 18 years, says... "The band members
clearly are having fun and that spirit moves right in to the
congregation….it is contagious. The words to the songs are
displayed on a screen so all can sing and keep the rhythm. The
energy moves even the faint at heart to clap along and join
in. "Ode to Joy" and "Be Thou My Vision" are the hymns I was
singing as a teen and they are incorporated in a contemporary way
at this service."
